Chapter Projects

The Upsilon Chapter of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. works to ensure that we engage in projects that uplift the mission, vision, and ideals of the sorority.

Think Pink Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Events

The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc.(NSPDK), Upsilon Chapter was committed to “THINKING PINK” this past October, and all the Octobers from here on, to show their support for breast cancer awareness. Several members of the chapter are breast cancer survivors or have had family members battle this disease.

October was declared Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985, and the international campaign has continued today to promote screening and early detection of the disease and NSPDK, Inc. is joining in. On October 13, 2021, each sorority member took on the personal challenge to promote breast cancer awareness in her circle of influence—work, home, community, and other civic engagements.

As we know, the pink ribbon and color are cemented as the symbols for breast cancer awareness, and the sorority turned their lives pink to ensure that everyone they encountered was fully aware of breast cancer, the need for early detection, and the need for continuous research.

Upsilon Chapter’s member, Dr. Constance Hendricks, who is a career community health nurse educator and health administrator, thinks that speaking about breast cancer awareness and spreading it throughout the Southeast Region is an absolute must.

The chapter has already begun planning partnership events for October 2022.

Literacy Support

The Upsilon Chapter of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc is elated to promote literacy in Macon County.  For 2024-2025, the sorority launched Sorors Serving Schools (SSS) with each of our seven schools, where sorors who have retired from full-time educational careers visit their chosen school once a month to support literacy and other areas of need.

Through planning and intentionality, the chapter also partners the Tuskegee Institute High School Class of 1974 to support the newly launched READtoME Program. The vision of READtoME is that parents, siblings, grandparents, neighbors, and the like will read incessantly to our three to five-year-olds.

The goal of the program is to impact reading in the lives of Macon County HeadStart students by ensuring they have books in their hands, hearts, and in their homes.  To do this, books were needed, and the Upsilon Chapter of the NSPDK was on the case with scores of books donated, collected, and will be delivered to Headstart and the Tuskegee/Macon County Public Library  beginning in January 2022, just in time for Read Across NSPDK.

Annual Sock Drop

For several years, the Upsilon Chapter of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. has supported Magnolia Haven Nursing home residents with its NSPDK Annual Holiday Sock Drop. Socks were donated on December 23, 2021. The sorors of the Upsilon chapter purchased, collected, donated, and personally delivered socks to the residents.

While the socks are meant to bring some holiday cheer to the nursing home residents, the socks are selected with a medicinal purpose in mind.  Many of the residents suffer from ailments such as diabetes or poor circulation; so, thermal socks and diabetic socks were offered.

According to VeryWellHealth (https://www.verywellhealth.com/what-are-diabetic-socks-1087728), diabetic socks are specially designed to keep feet dry, decrease the risk of a foot injury, and enhance blood circulation. They are a key part of foot care, which is an important aspect of diabetes management due to potential damage to the nervous and circulatory systems caused by high blood sugar levels.

The Upsilon Chapter is very proud to provide support in the care of our wisest generation of residents at our local nursing home.
